The Woman's Club of St. Matthews
Overview
The Woman's Club of St. Matthews (WCSM) is a U.S. nonprofit organization incorporated as a 501(c)(4) entity. Established on April 7, 1938, it became a federated club of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) on May 16, 1938. The club's mission is to promote social, charitable, educational, and cultural work, fostering community improvement through volunteer service.
History and Activities
Since its inception, the club has been dedicated to community service and development. In its early years, members contributed significantly to establishing the first St. Matthews branch of the Louisville Free Public Library and advocating for a kindergarten at Greenhouse School, now St. Matthews City Hall. Over the decades, the WCSM has supported various causes, including selling war bonds, promoting seat belt use, providing support to local seniors, knitting blankets for those in need, and aiding victims of domestic violence.
Community Engagement
Today, the WCSM focuses on three main areas: service, scholarship, and educational programs. The club is committed to assisting local ministries and organizations, such as the Kentucky Humane Society and Operation Smile. Each month, WCSM provides financial support to the St. Matthews Area Ministries and participates in volunteer activities with organizations like Supplies Overseas (previously SOS).
Educational Initiatives
Annually, WCSM offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors and an additional scholarship to an adult woman pursuing further education within the St. Matthews area.
Federated Role
As a member of the GFWC, WCSM is part of the Golden Fillies District, which includes Grayson, Hardin, and Jefferson counties in Kentucky. The GFWC is one of the oldest and largest women's organizations worldwide, dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service.
Current Status
Despite challenges in attracting new members, the club remains active in community service and continues its legacy of fostering community improvement. The club hosts free public programs and workshops monthly, excluding July and December, focusing on various community interests.
Symbols and Traditions
The club's colors are Green and White, and its flower is the Iris. WCSM also maintains a rich tradition of community-oriented prayer and creeds, emphasizing unity and kindness among its members.
