First Congregational Church UCC

To love and accept others unconditionally as God loves and accepts us, and by example, to encourage others to do the same. To challenge ourselves to grow spiritually through worship, education, nurture, reflection, discussion, fellowship, and outreach. To minister to others locally, nationally, and globally with the same fervor as we minister to ourselves, through the sharing of our talents, gifts, and resources.

First Congregational Church UCC, Manhattan, Kansas

The First Congregational Church UCC, located in Manhattan, Kansas, is a historic church that has been a cornerstone of the community since its establishment in 1856. This church is part of the United Church of Christ (UCC) denomination and is known for its rich history and dedication to social causes.

History

The church's origins date back to April 22, 1855, when the Rev. Charles Blood conducted a worship service in a tent near the current church site. Rev. Blood, an abolitionist preacher educated at Lane Theological Seminary, played a significant role in the church's early development[1]. The church was officially founded on January 6, 1856, with 12 charter members. Soon after, land was donated for building construction, which began in 1858. Notable figures such as Owen Lovejoy and Stephen A. Douglas contributed to its construction[1].

Buildings and Architecture

The original stone church was completed in 1859 after a tornado damaged the nearly finished building in 1859. The building was dedicated on July 24, 1859. Over the years, significant expansions have been made, including the addition of the present Sanctuary in 1904 and renovations in 2000. The church also added new offices, meeting spaces, restrooms, and a kitchen in 1990[1].

Social and Community Engagement

The First Congregational Church UCC is recognized for its progressive stance on social issues. In 2000, it became one of the first churches in Kansas to call an openly gay man as pastor. In 2003, the congregation adopted an Open and Affirming Statement, and in 2014, it called Rev. Caela Simmons Wood as its first female pastor[1]. The church continues to serve the community through various initiatives and worship services, including those in the Taizé tradition.

Recognition

The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, acknowledging its historical significance. It remains the oldest Protestant church building in Kansas still in use by its original congregation[1].

Affiliation

As part of the United Church of Christ, the congregation emphasizes autonomy in local matters while supporting broader denominational initiatives focused on social justice and inclusivity[5].
