The church's origins date back to April 22, 1855, when the Rev. Charles Blood conducted a worship service in a tent near the current church site. Rev. Blood, an abolitionist preacher educated at Lane Theological Seminary, played a significant role in the church's early development[1]. The original stone church was completed in 1859 after a tornado damaged the nearly finished building in 1859. The building was dedicated on July 24, 1859. Over the years, significant expansions have been made, including the addition of the present Sanctuary in 1904 and renovations in 2000. The First Congregational Church UCC is recognized for its progressive stance on social issues. In 2000, it became one of the first churches in Kansas to call an openly gay man as pastor. In 2003, the congregation adopted an Open and Affirming Statement, and in 2014, it called Rev. Caela Simmons Wood as its first female pastor[1].
