A tale of mutualism involving spring ephemerals and ants! 🐜🐜🐜 Did you know that up to 40% of woodland flower seed dispersal is carried out by ants? It is called myrmecochory! Those magical plants called spring ephemerals that appear in early spring and begin to transform our gardens have evolved to mutually depend on ants for seed dispersal. If you have gardened for any period of time, you learn that the existence of flowering plants depends upon effective seed dispersal. 🍃🌿🍃 These woodland beauties which include Trillium, Violets, Wild Ginger and Wood Poppy produce seeds that have an attachment called elaiosome. Elaiosome contains lipids and is protein rich and is so appealing to ants that they carry the seeds back to their nest. The elaiosome is fed to their larvae and the seed discarded to grow elsewhere. 💜💜💜 Do you have any spring ephemerals in your garden? #woohoogardenmoments #alwayslearning #springephemerals #ants #myrmecochory (fb)

Community revitalization from the ground up Dahlia Store will open March 2025 View It. March 2025 Our journey has taken us We formed our nonprofit in 2015 as a cutflower farm. Through our love of nature and deep respect for pollinators we started a native plant nursery to promote native plant growth beyond our gardens. From there the pandemic gave us the opportunity to offer a safe place for people to gather outside and our Wellness Garden was born.
