This past Monday, the History Department and Student Government Association came together to host a Restoration Day at Gossom Cemetery. This historic, one-acre memorial sits at the center of the Mineral Area College campus. Over 170 years old, the cemetery’s first burial was Martha Jane Huddleston in 1851. With tools in hand, students, faculty, and volunteers spent the afternoon cleaning headstones and preserving the dignity of this important resting place. Using the gentlest means possible to avoid damaging the stones, attendees worked for three hours, carefully cleaning and washing the markers. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of caring for local history—not just in books, but in the landscapes and stories that surround us. Future restoration plans for the cemetery include rebuilding the long-removed wrought iron fence and installing a historic information sign to tell the story of Gossom Cemetery and its foundational relationship to Mineral Area College.
