UU Congregation of Hillsborough
Overview
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Hillsborough (UUCH) is a nonprofit organization and religious community located in Hillsborough, North Carolina. It was founded in 1993 by a dozen area Unitarians and Universalists who initially gathered for monthly potluck suppers. The congregation is part of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), a liberal religious tradition formed from the consolidation of Unitarianism and Universalism in 1961.
History
The congregation conducted its first regular meetings in the parish hall of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in October 1993. It held its first "public" meeting at New Hope Elementary School in March 1994. By August 1994, the congregation began Sunday morning services at the Carolina Friends School. In April 1995, UUCH adopted its first Articles of Association, marking the founding of the congregation, which was formally incorporated in July 1995.
UUCH became a member of the UUA in September 1995. The congregation moved into its current building, located on Old NC 10, after purchasing the property in 1996. The building was dedicated on May 2, 1999, with contributions from the congregation members who completed its construction.
Governance and Leadership
Since the early 2000s, UUCH has had part-time and consulting ministers. In 2008, Rev. Patty Hanneman became the consulting minister. The congregation also experienced growth with an increase in Sunday attendance and children's participation in services.
In 2018, the congregation rewrote its Articles of Association, clarifying roles and responsibilities within the organization. This change established the called minister as the head of staff, responsible for hiring decisions. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UUCH transitioned to a lay-led congregation in 2020, focusing on supporting its members while planning for future growth.
Values and Community Engagement
UUCH covenants to "Partner with the earth, Embrace justice, Advance freedom of thought, Connect in love, and Enrich our spirits." The congregation is actively involved in social justice efforts, partnering with local organizations such as the Northern Orange NAACP, Orange County Justice United, Orange Congregations in Mission, and New Hope Elementary School. These partnerships highlight the congregation's commitment to environmental sustainability, racial equity, and education.
In 2007, UUCH was recognized by the UUA as a Welcoming Congregation, signifying its dedication to educating and advocating for LGBTQ+ issues within and beyond its community. This recognition reflects UUCH's progressive stance on social justice and inclusivity.
Worship Services
UUCH holds Sunday worship services at 10:30 AM, which are available both in person and online. These services feature messages from the minister, guest speakers, and members sharing insights and experiences. The congregation supports an inclusive and spiritually enriching environment for its members and the broader community.
