Heavy Constructors Association of the Greater Kansas City Area

The Heavy Constructors Association of the Greater Kansas City Area, with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 44-0563901, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing the interests of the heavy construction industry in both Kansas and Missouri. Founded in 1950, the association marks a significant milestone of 75 years in 2025, stressing its role in shaping the region's infrastructure.

History and Purpose

The Heavy Constructors Association was established by leading construction industry leaders of the 1950s with a shared vision to unify the industry's voice, ensuring high standards of skill, integrity, and responsibility in public works projects. Under the leadership of its first president, L.J. “Lloyd” Kissick, the association played a crucial role in organizing community efforts such as "Plan Bulldozer," which provided disaster response during emergencies, including the 1951 flood.

Projects and Impact

Throughout its history, the association has contributed significantly to the development of critical infrastructure in the Kansas City region. Notable projects include the construction of vital highways like I-70 and I-35 under the Interstate Highway Act, revitalizing Union Station, and developing Kansas City International Airport. These initiatives have not only connected communities but also created thousands of jobs, supporting local economic growth.

Advocacy and Focus Areas

The Heavy Constructors Association is a highway-heavy utility chapter of both the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). It advocates for better, safer infrastructure, promoting higher levels of funding for modern highways, roads, bridges, and water treatment facilities at both state and federal levels. The association also supports modern transportation initiatives and sustainable construction practices.

Membership and Leadership

As of recent years, the association comprises over 155 member companies, representing the best in the industry. Its leadership, including Executive Director Bridgette Williams, is dedicated to building strong relationships between members and local leaders to reinforce the region's infrastructure.

Community Engagement and Scholarships

The Heavy Constructors Association offers Industry Advancement Scholarships to individuals planning or preparing for careers in heavy construction, supporting the next generation of industry professionals. Additionally, it addresses critical issues such as mental health within the construction industry, emphasizing the importance of suicide prevention and providing resources for those in need.

Current Status and Future Outlook

In celebrating its 75th anniversary, the association reflects on its legacy while looking forward to future challenges and opportunities. Its commitment to progress remains unwavering, with ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and foster a more economically vibrant region.
