Civil Air Patrol

Follow Message Edit

For more than 50 years, the Civil Air Patrol has aggressively performed the missions Congress mandated in 1946: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services. Aerospace Education America's love of manned flight started with the Wright brothers and continues unabated during this century. World War II showcased the important role aviation would play in the future and national leaders recognized the importance of stimulating public interest in aerospace activities. CAP, as the civilian Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was most suited to perform this mission. Their efforts focused on two different audiences - internal CAP members and the general public. Aerospace educators working out of CAP's National Headquarters at Maxwell AFB, Ala., provide materials that are current and reflect the highest standards of educational excellence. The congressional charter also tasked CAP to stimulate public interest in aerospace issues. These external programs are primarily conducted through our nation's education systems. These workshops highlight basic aerospace knowledge and focus on advances in aerospace technology. Textbooks, learning tools, and visual aids geared to stimulate interest in aerospace matters also are provided for teachers to use in their classrooms. Started in 1951, these workshops have reached hundreds of thousands of young people. CAP also plans and executes the National Congress on Aviation and Space Education. NCASE is the premier aerospace education conference held in the nation. The NCASE is designed to promote an understanding of aviation and space education to motivate and encourage teachers to incorporate aerospace education into their curriculum. It also encourages aerospace leaders to speak out on aerospace issues facing our nation today.

Civil Air Patrol

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressionally chartered, federally supported nonprofit corporation serving as the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). Established on December 1, 1941, CAP was originally founded to utilize civilian aviation resources for national defense during wartime. Over the years, it has evolved into a multifaceted public service organization focused on youth development, aerospace education, and emergency services.

Mission and Vision

Civil Air Patrol's mission is to support America's communities by providing emergency response, diverse aviation and ground services, youth development, and promoting air, space, and cyber power through aerospace education. Its vision aligns with its mission, emphasizing service to communities, lifesaving operations, and shaping future leaders.

Core Values and Structure

CAP operates under the core values of integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect. The organization is structured along military lines, with a hierarchical command chain and ranks similar to those of the U.S. Air Force. It includes echelons such as National Headquarters, regions, wings, groups, squadrons, and flights.

Missions and Activities

Civil Air Patrol is involved in several key mission areas:

  • Aerospace Education: CAP provides training and educational resources in aviation and STEM fields for both its members and the broader community.
  • Cadet Programs: The organization offers youth development through leadership, character development, and career exploration.
  • Emergency Services: CAP conducts search and rescue operations, disaster relief, and humanitarian services. It supports operations for counterdrug missions, homeland security, and assists various federal and state agencies.
Assets and Operations

Civil Air Patrol maintains a fleet of aircraft and unmanned aerial systems (drones), utilizing these resources for training, aerial reconnaissance, and support missions. Members engage in activities such as search and rescue exercises (SAREX), aerial target missions for air defense readiness, and disaster response efforts.

History

Founded just before the U.S. entry into World War II, CAP played a significant role in national defense during the war, contributing to antisubmarine warfare and search and rescue efforts. In 1948, Congress officially established CAP as the auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. In 2014, CAP was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for its World War II service.

Recognition and Partnerships

Civil Air Patrol is recognized as part of the U.S. Air Force's Total Force, working closely with military and civilian agencies in its operations. CAP-USAF, located at Maxwell Air Force Base, provides support and oversight for CAP activities, ensuring coordination with other federal agencies for homeland security, disaster response, and aviation-related missions.

Membership

CAP has a diverse membership of over 60,000 individuals, including adult members and cadets across more than 1,500 units nationwide. Members come from various backgrounds and participate in a range of aviation-related activities and community service projects.
