Kalanidhi Dance

Overview

Kalanidhi Dance is a leading U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and educating about Kuchipudi dance, a traditional Indian classical dance form. Founded in 2005, it is recognized as the first professional Kuchipudi dance ensemble in the United States.

History

The company was established by founding members Smitha Hughes, Chitra Kalyandurg, and Silpa Nanan. Initially, it aimed to maintain traditional repertoire while exploring new choreographic directions. Other early performers included Asha Dwarka, Srilekha Jayanthi, and Lavanya Thamire. In 2006, Kalanidhi introduced the Kid Camp, a summer program for children aged 6 to 10, which combines dance and music to bring Indian fables to life.

Mission and Activities

Kalanidhi Dance is committed to artistic excellence in Kuchipudi, training a new generation of dancers to high standards, and exploring new directions in Indian classical dance. The organization collaborates with local and international artists to enrich their performances and extend the reach of Kuchipudi. Notable collaborations include partnerships with Opera Lafayette for productions like "Lalla Roukh" and "Gods of Egypt," which were performed at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center.

Kalanidhi regularly offers performances and interactive workshops at schools and community organizations, engaging audiences of all ages and promoting an appreciation for Indian arts and culture. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization shifted its programming to a virtual platform, presenting monthly dance performances and supporting local and international relief efforts.

Artistic Philosophy

At the heart of Kalanidhi Dance's artistic philosophy is the belief that creativity is fostered through dialogue and interaction with other artists. This approach allows the company to push the boundaries of Kuchipudi while maintaining its traditional essence.

Recognition and Support

Kalanidhi Dance is supported by prominent institutions such as the John F. Kennedy Center and the National Endowment for the Arts. The organization is designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, making donations tax deductible.
