National Society of the Children of the American Revolution (NSCAR)
Overview

The National Society of the Children of the American Revolution (NSCAR) is a patriotic youth organization founded on April 5, 1895, by Harriett Mulford Stone Lothrop, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and a renowned children's author. NSCAR is the nation's oldest and largest patriotic youth organization, dedicated to instilling American values and patriotic spirit among young people.

History

The idea for NSCAR was first proposed by Harriett Lothrop at the Fourth Continental Congress of the DAR in February 1895. Lothrop, known for her books written under the pen name Margaret Sidney, emphasized the importance of teaching American history and patriotic values to children. Her vision quickly gained support, leading to the establishment of NSCAR. Initially, all leaders were adult members of the DAR, but over time, leadership positions have evolved to include youth members.

Objectives

NSCAR has six key objectives that serve as its foundational principles:

  • Acquire knowledge of American History: Encourage learning about the American Revolution and U.S. history.
  • Preserve Historical Sites: Restore and maintain places associated with American independence.
  • Honor Revolution Heroes: Commemorate those who contributed to American independence.
  • Celebrate Patriotic Anniversaries: Promote the observance of important national dates.
  • Cherish the U.S. Flag: Foster respect for the American flag.
  • Uphold American Liberty: Promote and extend the principles of American liberty and patriotism.
Membership and Activities

Membership is open to boys and girls under the age of 22 who are lineally descended from individuals who supported the American Revolution. Members engage in various activities focused on patriotism, service, and education about American heritage. Through these activities, members gain leadership skills and participate in events such as hosting formal gatherings and conducting meetings according to parliamentary procedures.

Current Activities and Projects

NSCAR emphasizes community service and educational projects. Members are involved in supporting historical markers, preserving historical sites, educational programs, and aiding museums in their mission to preserve American history. The organization also focuses on supporting military personnel and veterans through various initiatives.

Impact and Legacy

Since its inception, NSCAR has involved thousands of young Americans in fostering a love for their country's history and principles. With over 9,000 current members, the organization continues to shape future generations by imparting values of patriotism, service, and leadership.
