AFRICA NEEDS LIONS: a responsible development approach to lion conservation ALERT is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to the conservation of the African Lion and the ecosystems on which the species rely on. The African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) is dedicated to a multi-disciplinary approach for the facilitation and promotion of sound conservation and management plans for the African lion (Panthera leo) and the ecosystems on which the species relies. Through responsible development we aim to realize the species’ potential to provide substantial social, cultural, ecological and economic benefits, that are distributed equitably amongst stakeholders to promote sustainable motivation in them for the protection of Africa’s natural heritage.

ALERT African Lion Environmental Research Trust If we act now we can ensure the survival of this iconic species Welcome to ALERT Lions are currently listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In West Africa the species is now classified as Critically Endangered. Just over one hundred years ago there were once more than 200000 wild lions living in Africa. Today there are only about 20000 wild lions taking the plains of Africa.
