Based on the potency of nicotinic receptor activation by nicotine and on its ability to chaperone such receptors, investigators from Caltech developed an app that allows to simulate early steps in the development of nicotine dependence. GLP-1 agonists have become quite popular with approximately 12% of US adults taking a GLP-1 agonist. However, treatment of #diabetes is still a major concern and focus for drug development purposes. One promising target expressed on the insulin-producing β-cells, GPR40, had a ligand (fasiglifam) make it to phase III trials before failing due to liver toxicity. A group from Zydus Lifesciences (Zydus Research Centre) identified a new/novel GPR40 agonist (ZYDG2) that lacks the toxicity seen in fasiglifam and effectively increases GLP-1 and insulin levels, thereby treating type 2 diabetes.
