Charlton Historical Society Incorporated

History and Establishment

Founded in 1963, the society is headquartered at the historic Rider Tavern. The tavern, originally constructed in 1797, is one of the most intact examples of a Federal period wayside tavern in New England[1][3]. This school is available for small group functions and features photographs and historical information about all the district schools that ceased operations in 1949[1][3]. Another significant site is the Militia Lot, a town-owned property opposite the Rider Tavern, where General Lafayette reviewed troops in 1824[3].
