Charlton Historical Society Incorporated
The Charlton Historical Society Incorporated is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the historical heritage of Charlton, Massachusetts.
History and Establishment
Founded in 1963, the society is headquartered at the historic Rider Tavern. The tavern, originally constructed in 1797, is one of the most intact examples of a Federal period wayside tavern in New England[1][3]. Notably, General Marquis de Lafayette visited the tavern in 1824, underscoring its historical significance[3].
Activities and Sites
The society offers guided tours of the Rider Tavern from May through October by appointment. Additionally, it manages archives containing information on early residents and historic houses, accessible to the public by appointment[1].
The society also oversees the last remaining district school owned by the town, which houses historical artifacts such as a bell from circa 1719. This school is available for small group functions and features photographs and historical information about all the district schools that ceased operations in 1949[1][3]. Another significant site is the Militia Lot, a town-owned property opposite the Rider Tavern, where General Lafayette reviewed troops in 1824[3].
Mission and Role
As a guardian of local history, the Charlton Historical Society plays a crucial role in educating the public about Charlton's unique heritage. It is recognized as part of the Northside Historic District, listed among the remarkable places in Massachusetts[1]. The society's efforts aim to preserve historical sites and materials, ensuring their availability for future generations.
Legal Status
Charlton Historical Society Incorporated is registered as an educational organization[5]. Its mission aligns with the broader goals of preserving historical awareness and promoting community engagement with Charlton's past.
