"They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters..." Today on National Maritime Day, we take a moment to remember that America has always been a maritime nation. Long before steamships crossed the Atlantic, Baltimore Clippers were racing through the waves during the War of 1812 -- bold & built for speed. That spirit carried forward into the age of steam & beyond, shaping who we are. Over 250,000 Merchant Mariners served during WWII — more than 6,700 gave their lives, hundreds were taken prisoner, & over 800 U.S. ships were lost or damaged. Their sacrifice is a part of our history that we should never forget. Here in Maryland & everywhere she goes, PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II sails as a living memorial to all Marylanders lost at sea — a powerful reminder of the courage & sacrifice that continue to define our maritime spirit.
