Overview

The Pano Koumantaros Cancer Research Fund Inc. is a nonprofit organization established to support cancer research, treatment, and care initiatives primarily in the Puget Sound community. Founded in 2006 in memory of Pano Koumantaros, who succumbed to bladder cancer, the organization aims to alleviate the struggles faced by cancer patients and their families through various programs and community outreach efforts.

History

The fund was initiated by Pano Koumantaros's family, including his sons Petros and Yannis Koumantaros, and their mother, following Pano's death in December 2005. His family recognized the impact of cancer not only on themselves but on many others, which led them to create a supportive foundation in his name. Their first fundraising initiative was a golf tournament and dinner, which has become an annual event that attracts participants from various backgrounds. This event, along with other fundraising efforts, has raised over $1.7 million for cancer research and support since its inception[1][2].

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of the Pano Koumantaros Cancer Research Fund is to advance cancer research and improve treatment methodologies. The organization focuses on:

  • Funding research projects and clinical trials related to bladder cancer and other types of cancer.
  • Providing assistance and equipment, such as hospital sleeper chairs, to improve the comfort of patients and families during hospital visits.
  • Supporting community initiatives, including summer camps for children battling cancer, and ongoing support programs for families who have lost loved ones to the disease[1][4].

Impact and Community Engagement

The fund emphasizes its commitment to the local community, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, aligning its efforts with the legacy of Pano Koumantaros. Events such as the annual Spectrum Open golf tournament foster community involvement, raising awareness and financial support for cancer-related initiatives. The fund encourages collaboration with local businesses and organizations, enhancing its outreach and effectiveness in the battle against cancer[2][3].

Leadership

Under the leadership of Petros Koumantaros, who serves as Vice President, the fund has continuously expanded its reach and impact. The executive director, Liz Truong, brings nonprofit expertise, enhancing operational effectiveness and community engagement. The fund has evolved beyond its original circle of supporters, gaining traction among clients and partners in the retirement industry, showcasing a model of sustainable philanthropic effort[1][4].

Conclusion

The Pano Koumantaros Cancer Research Fund Inc. stands as a testament to the power of community involvement and dedicated support for cancer research and patient care. Through its ongoing efforts, the organization aims to provide hope and assistance to those affected by cancer, ensuring that Pano Koumantaros's legacy endures in the fight against this devastating disease.
