The roots of Poor Robert's Mission trace back to the charitable efforts of Bobby Abbo, who, along with patrons of his family’s Roma Restaurant, began raising funds for the Little Sisters of the Poor. Recognizing the impact of their fundraising activities, Poor Robert's Charities, Inc. was formally established as a nonprofit corporation in 1981, significantly increasing its annual fundraising efforts through events such as golf tournaments and cocktail parties.

Following Abbo's passing in 2014, his nephew Zachary Huke took on the role of President, leading the transition to Poor Robert's Mission. The organization achieved 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status that same year, allowing it to expand its charitable activities. In its inaugural year, Poor Robert's Mission successfully distributed over 5,500 turkeys to more than 80 local organizations, demonstrating the community's support and commitment to its mission.

Mission and Programs

The primary mission of Poor Robert's Mission is to bring joy and nourishment to thousands of families during the Thanksgiving holiday by distributing turkeys. The organization has consistently provided meals to those in need, achieving significant milestones over the years:

• In 2024, Poor Robert's Mission purchased 7,500 turkeys for distribution to 108 charities and nonprofit organizations in the Washington, DC area.
• In previous years, distribution efforts have included over 6,900 turkeys provided to 97 charities, serving over 55,000 individuals.

The organization's fundraising model ensures minimal overhead costs, facilitating direct support to the communities it serves.
