Overview
The George Khoury Association of Baseball Leagues Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting youth sports, particularly tee ball, baseball, and softball. Founded in 1934 by George M. Khoury, it has evolved into one of the longest operating youth sports programs in the United States. The organization is headquartered in Missouri and operates internationally.
History
George M. Khoury created the first Khoury League as a baseball league for his sons and their friends in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1936, he and attorney Maury Karner officially established the George Khoury Association of Baseball Leagues, Inc. The first games were held on Mother's Day in Forest Park, St. Louis. Khoury's vision emphasized inclusivity, ensuring every child could play regardless of skill level. He adopted the motto, "The Khoury League Is Interested In The Child That Nobody Else Wants."
Following World War II, the organization expanded rapidly, first to areas around St. Louis, then to other states including Illinois, Kentucky, and Florida. In 1958, the Khoury Association pioneered the first organized girls' softball league in the United States. Today, Khoury Leagues are active in many states and several countries.
Programs
The George Khoury Association offers structured sports programs for children starting from age four, progressing through different age groups with appropriate ball sizes and field dimensions. The organization is flexible, allowing local leagues to tailor their programs to community needs. Besides baseball and softball, some Khoury Leagues also engage in soccer, basketball, bowling, and other sports.
Governance and Funding
The organization operates with an all-volunteer Board of Governors and is managed as a hub system, with an international office providing administrative and advisory support. Financially, it relies on program services, investment income, royalties, and sales of assets for revenue. Donations to the organization are tax-deductible, and it has a 3/4-star rating on Charity Navigator.
Recognition and Alumni
Over the years, the Khoury Association has received recognition from U.S. presidents, including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Notable alumni include Major League Baseball players Dal Maxvill, Homer Bush, and Mike Shannon, as well as umpire Davey Phillips. Honorary lifetime members include sports figures and personalities like Jack Buck and Gussie Busch.
Legacy
George Khoury's legacy extends beyond the sports field, emphasizing character development and community engagement. His work has contributed significantly to youth sports development in the United States and internationally. Despite his passing in 1967, the George Khoury Association continues to promote healthy lifestyles and community involvement through sports participation.
