On this day in Lexington history: May 28, 1927—Halley Field officially opened as Lexington’s first airport. On what was little more than a cleared grassy field Lexington was officially open for air travel. The land was owned by a Dr. Samuel H. Halley and the manager of the airport was a noted WW1 pilot Ted Kincannon. Despite logistical limitations the site was used for air shows and flight trainings; small aircraft used the field for takeoff and landing as well. Notably, the famous pilot Charles Lindbergh landed at the airport in March of 1928 to visit a friend. In 1934, the site—located along Leestown Road near Boiling Springs Drive at historic marker 2440—was converted back to farmland and later became Meadowthorpe subdivision. #LexHistory #250lex Today's post was written by Spring 2025 Lexington History Museum intern, Durbin Tinsley.
