Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater

Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater is a nonprofit organization founded in 1975 by Dame Libby Komaiko. It is the premier Spanish dance company in the United States, based at Northeastern Illinois University's Department of Music and Dance.

Mission

The organization's mission is to preserve, present, and promote Spanish dance and culture, encompassing classical, folkloric, flamenco, and contemporary traditions. It aims to share these rich cultural heritages with audiences nationally and internationally while fostering new artistic creativity rooted in the Ibero-Hispanic experience.

Leadership and Structure

The Ensemble Español is led by Artistic Director Irma Suárez Ruiz and Executive Director Jorge Perez, who have been integral to the company's growth and artistic direction. The company includes over 40 dancers, singers, musicians, and guest artists who contribute to its performances and educational programs.

Arts Education and Community Programs

Ensemble Español offers extensive arts education programs, including the Paso a Paso initiative, which provides comprehensive instruction in flamenco, folkloric, and classical dance styles. These programs reach thousands of students across Chicago, with partnerships in four public schools and participation in the After School Matters program. Additionally, the organization collaborates with various cultural entities, such as the Chicago Human Rhythm Project and Instituto Cervantes.

Performances and Collaborations

The Ensemble Español has toured extensively both nationally and internationally, performing in countries like Mexico, Australia, and Spain. It has collaborated with renowned artists and entities, including Manolete, Nana Lorca, and the National Ballet of Spain. The company has also participated in notable events like the Chicago Dancing Festival and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.

Honors and Recognition

Founder Dame Libby Komaiko was awarded the Lazo de Dama de Isabel la Catolica by King Juan Carlos I of Spain for her contributions to promoting Spanish culture in the U.S. The organization has received recognition from former U.S. President Barack Obama and has established endowed scholarships for dancers to attend Northeastern Illinois University.

Financial Overview

As a 501(c)(3) organization, Ensemble Español relies primarily on donations and program services for its revenue. Past financial reports indicate significant dependence on contributions, with a smaller portion derived from program services and investment income. Its expenses are mainly allocated to salaries and wages, supporting its comprehensive educational and performance activities.

Overall, Ensemble Español plays a crucial role in preserving Spanish dance traditions and fostering cultural exchange between the U.S. and Spain.
