His family fled during the Russian Revolution, eventually settling in various locations including Alaska and Seattle. Krenov moved to Sweden in 1947, where he studied under the renowned Carl Malmsten. Over the years, he became celebrated for his craftsmanship, teaching, and writing. Notable among his many achievements was his role in establishing the Fine Woodworking program at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg, where he taught from 1981 to 2002.

The foundation's establishment in 2013 marked a significant step in ensuring that Krenov's legacy and values continue to inspire future generations of woodworkers.
