Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, commonly known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a nonprofit organization that serves as the governing body for Freemasonry in the state of Texas. This fraternal organization is dedicated to the principles of Freemasonry, aiming to improve individuals morally and socially through a belief in God and a commitment to community service.

History

The history of Freemasonry in Texas dates back to early attempts by Stephen F. Austin in 1828 to form a lodge under the York Grand Lodge of Mexico. However, due to political tensions and the Mexican government's outlawing of Freemasonry in 1828, these efforts were initially unsuccessful[1].

The first Masonic lodge in Texas, Holland Lodge No. 36, was chartered in 1836 under a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. Anson Jones, who later became both the fourth President of the Republic of Texas and the first Grand Master of Masons in Texas, played a significant role in its establishment[1][2]. Following the Texas Revolution, two more lodges were formed in Nacogdoches and San Augustine in 1837, paving the way for the creation of the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas[2][3].

Mission and Activities

Freemasonry's primary objective is to take "good men and help them become better men"[3][4]. The organization supports various charitable initiatives throughout Texas, including programs for children's education and health care. For example, Masons contribute to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and have initiatives like "Fantastic Teeth" and "Take Time to Read" to support local communities[2].

Structure and Governance

The Grand Lodge of Texas operates under a hierarchical structure, with local lodges reporting to the state-level organization. Members progress through three symbolic degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. These degrees are based on biblical imagery and emphasize moral improvement[3].

Legacy

The Grand Lodge of Texas remains a significant and enduring part of Texas history, with its legacy tied to key figures in the Texas Revolution. It continues to reinforce the values of brotherly love, relief, and truth, supporting both its members and the broader community through various charitable endeavors[2][3].
