Grand Lodge A F & A M of Virginia

The Grand Lodge A F & A M of Virginia, officially known as the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a prominent U.S. nonprofit organization. It was constituted on October 30, 1778, making it one of the oldest continuous and independent Masonic Grand Lodges in the United States. The organization claims to be such, although it is disputed by the Grand Lodges of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, both of which assert similar claims to antiquity.

History

The creation of the Grand Lodge of Virginia was a culmination of events that began with a convention held on May 6, 1777. This convention laid the groundwork for forming a unified Masonic entity in Virginia by gathering delegates from various chartered lodges across the state. The grand lodge was formally established through the union of eight chartered lodges located in Norfolk, Port Royal, Blandford, Fredericksburg, Saint Tammany, Williamsburg, Botetourt, and Cabin Point. Other lodges in the region, such as those in Yorktown and Alexandria, chose not to participate in the formation of this entity.

In 1784, the grand lodge relocated its headquarters from Williamsburg to Richmond, where it remains today.

George Washington and Freemasonry

George Washington, the first U.S. President and a member of the Fredericksburg Lodge, was a prominent figure in American Freemasonry. Although he was invited to be the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, he declined due to his military duties and because he had not served as a Master or Warden of any lodge. Washington's involvement with Masonry was significant throughout his life, and he participated in various Masonic ceremonies and events.

Operations and Mission

The Grand Lodge of Virginia oversees over 270 Masonic Lodges and has more than 26,000 members throughout the state. It is part of a global fraternity that emphasizes the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. The organization's mission is to foster personal growth among its members while promoting community service and fraternity. Freemasonry is open to men aged 18 and above from all backgrounds, with a belief in a Supreme Being being the sole requirement for membership.

Structure and Governance

The Grand Lodge operates under a hierarchical structure typical of Masonic organizations. It is led by a Grand Master and other appointed officers who oversee the activities and governance of subordinate lodges across Virginia. This governance structure helps maintain consistency in Masonic practices and supports local lodges in their charitable and communal endeavors.

Legacy and Impact

The Grand Lodge of Virginia has played a significant role in American Masonic history, contributing to the development of fraternal and community service throughout the region. Its long-standing presence in Virginia reflects the enduring influence of Freemasonry in shaping civic and social values within the United States.
