It’s time for #ThrowbackThursday! Do you know when and where the first NAEA national office was established? In 1958, NAEA opened its first national office in Washington, D.C., located within the National Education Association (NEA) building. At that time, and continuing into the mid-1970s, NAEA was still officially identified in its constitution as a department of the NEA. In 1977, when NAEA relocated its headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Reston, Virginia, the Executive Director had to request special permission from the NEA to operate outside of the D.C. building—since NEA policy required all affiliates to maintain office space there. It ultimately took 37 years for NAEA to become fully independent from the NEA.
