Illinois Valley Yacht & Canoe Club

The Illinois Valley Yacht & Canoe Club is a 501(c)(7) social and recreational club located in Peoria Heights, Illinois. It was officially organized in April 1907 and initially known as the Illinois Valley Yacht Club. Following a fire that destroyed the nearby Peoria Canoe Club's clubhouse in 1914, the two organizations merged, forming the Illinois Valley Yacht & Canoe Club[3][4].

History

The club began as a gathering of boating enthusiasts who shared a passion for sailing and socializing on the Illinois River. Over the years, it expanded its focus to include canoeing, kayaking, and power boating, becoming a central hub for water sports and social events in the Peoria area. In 1925, the club was awarded an international trophy for its achievements in speed boating[3].

One significant event in its history was the construction of a seawall in 1938, following the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' announcement to install a lock and dam below Peoria. This infrastructure enhancement has since been extended multiple times to protect the shoreline and boats docked at the club[3].

The club has made numerous improvements over the decades, including modernizing its clubhouse, adding new amenities, and increasing its waterfront property holdings. These upgrades have enhanced both the physical and social aspects of the club[3].

Activities and Amenities

Today, the Illinois Valley Yacht & Canoe Club offers a range of activities and facilities for its members. It includes sailing races, sailing lessons for adults and children, and hosts various events such as fishing tournaments and social gatherings. The club also features a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and picnic areas, providing a vibrant community for boaters and water enthusiasts[1][3].

The club is well-equipped with modern amenities such as boat slips, storage facilities, a fuel dock, and a canoe and kayak launch area. These services cater to a variety of boaters and paddlers, making it a popular destination for those enjoying the Illinois River and surrounding waterways[1].

Nonprofit Status

As a 501(c)(7) organization, the Illinois Valley Yacht & Canoe Club supports social and recreational activities for its members, but donations to the club are not tax-deductible. The club generates its revenue primarily from program services and other related activities[2].
