Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc.
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the research and recreation of pre-seventeenth-century skills, arts, culture, and combat. Established on May 1, 1966, in Berkeley, California, the organization has grown to encompass over 30,000 paid members and thousands of additional participants from a diverse range of backgrounds.
History
The inception of the SCA was marked by a gathering of friends and history enthusiasts who staged an outdoor "Grand Tournament" in Berkeley. This event laid the groundwork for what would become a global collective of individuals passionate about historical reenactment. Initially named the Berkeley Society for Creative Anachronism, the group quickly expanded as interest grew, leading to the dropping of "Berkeley" from its title. The SCA was formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1968.
Mission and Activities
The mission of the SCA is to enrich individuals' lives through educational presentations, events, and demonstrations that allow participants to experience and learn about pre-17th-century history. Activities include:
-
Combat and Fencing: Members can engage in various forms of combat, including heavy armored fighting, rapier, and archery.
-
Arts and Crafts: Participants practice and teach historical arts such as calligraphy, sewing, metalworking, and cooking.
-
Events: The SCA hosts a plethora of events, including tournaments, coronations, symposiums, medieval feasts, and workshops. These gatherings often feature performances, social dancing, and opportunities for camaraderie.
Membership in the SCA provides access to these activities and includes benefits such as voting privileges and reduced event fees.
Organizational Structure
The SCA is organized into a system of kingdoms and local groups, each governed by elected leaders and officers. The organization comprises over 20 kingdoms worldwide, each containing local chapters known as shires, baronies, and cantons. Leadership within each kingdom is typically represented by a pair of monarchs—king and queen—who are selected through competitive tournaments.
The Society is managed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. This board oversees the operations and ensures adherence to organizational regulations, allowing for local autonomy while maintaining a unified structure across all affiliated groups.
Publications
The SCA publishes two notable quarterly periodicals:
-
The Compleat Anachronist: Focuses on specific historical topics, written by members knowledgeable in various aspects of medieval life.
-
Tournaments Illuminated: A magazine that covers a broader array of SCA-related news, events, and cultural insights.
Conclusion
The Society for Creative Anachronism has established itself as a prominent organization in the field of historical reenactment, fostering an inclusive environment for individuals interested in exploring the rich tapestry of pre-17th-century life. With tens of thousands of participants across multiple countries, the SCA continues to thrive, promoting education, community, and the joy of immersive historical experiences.
