The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Iowa is a nonprofit fraternal organization with a rich history deeply intertwined with the development of Iowa. It is part of the larger Masonic tradition, which focuses on brotherly love, relief, and truth.
History
The Masonic presence in Iowa began with early pioneers who settled in the area during the 1840s. The first Masonic meeting in the Iowa Territory was held on November 6, 1840, in Burlington, leading to the establishment of Des Moines Lodge № 41, Iowa Lodge № 42, Dubuque Lodge № 62, and Iowa City Lodge № 63. These lodges formed the foundation of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M., which was officially organized on January 9, 1844[1].
Mission and Activities
The organization aims to promote personal growth and community service among its members. It supports various charitable projects both locally and internationally, aligning with the broader Masonic goals of fostering good character and contributing to society's well-being[3]. The group also focuses on educational and cultural programs, enhancing the understanding of Masonry and its role in the community.
Structure and Membership
The organization includes numerous local lodges across Iowa, which operate under the umbrella of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M. Today, the Grand Lodge oversees more than 16,000 members and 247 local lodges, reflecting a significant Masonic presence in the state[1]. Prominent members have included public figures such as Senator Charles E. Grassley and former Governor Terry Branstad.
Awards and Recognition
Long-standing members are sometimes awarded gold certificates for their dedicated service, which exempts them from paying dues and is seen as an honor within the fraternity[2].
Current Status
As a nonprofit fraternal organization, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Iowa continue to contribute to both local and international causes, maintaining the tradition of community service and fraternal support.
