After 17 years of advocacy, community-building, and coalition work, the City Council reversed its prior decision and voted against flying the Pride flag during the month of June. This decision—driven by Council-member Jimmy Figueroa’s reversal—is a painful blow to our local LGBTQ+ community. Council-member Figueroa’s vote is not merely a policy shift; it is a betrayal of the very coalition that supported his rise to leadership. Let us be clear—homophobia, transphobia, and rhetoric that equates queer lives with criminality have no place in our city’s governance. We thank Mayor Esther Sanchez and Council-member Eric Joyce and the many local organizations, advocacy groups, and individuals who continue to stand with us. The North County LGBTQ+ Resource Center will continue to rise, organize, and advocate for an Oceanside where all people—especially the most marginalized—are seen, valued, and protected.
