National Exchange Club
The National Exchange Club is a prominent service organization in the United States, dedicated to community service and volunteerism. It was founded in 1911 in Detroit, Michigan, by a group of businessmen aiming to exchange ideas on improving their community. The name "Exchange" was suggested by Charles A. Berkey, who envisioned an organization where individuals could share perspectives to better serve their communities.
History
In 1917, The National Exchange Club was officially organized as a nonprofit, educational organization. It has since been headquartered in Toledo, Ohio. Over its history, the organization has grown significantly, now consisting of more than 600 clubs across the United States and Puerto Rico.
Programs of Service
The National Exchange Club operates under three main Programs of Service:
- Americanism: This program focuses on promoting patriotism and civic awareness. Members engage in activities that honor military and public service providers and foster national pride.
- Youth Programs: These programs include providing scholarships, awards such as the Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (ACE) Award, Youth of the Month, and Youth of the Year, and supporting Junior Exchange Clubs known as Excel Clubs for high school students.
- Community Service: This encompasses various activities tailored to serve the needs of local communities, including service to the underprivileged and support for community improvement projects.
National Project: Prevention of Child Abuse
One of the National Exchange Club's most notable commitments is its National Project, the prevention of child abuse, which was adopted in 1979. The organization provides public awareness materials and engages in annual activities during Child Abuse Prevention Month to raise awareness and support prevention efforts.
Awards and Honors
The National Exchange Club presents several awards, including the Book of Golden Deeds Award, which honors individuals who have dedicated significant time and effort to bettering their communities. Other notable awards include the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award and the Exchangite of the Year Award.
Structure
The organization is divided into districts and regions, with a national president overseeing the entire structure. Each local club is managed by a leadership team that includes a president, president-elect, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and a board of directors.
The National Exchange Club has collaborated with other organizations to expand its impact. For example, it has partnered with Veterans Matter to help provide housing for veterans by facilitating access to HUD-VASH vouchers.
In summary, the National Exchange Club is a significant force in community development and service in the United States, with a strong focus on youth programs, community service, patriotism, and the prevention of child abuse.
