The April 1st snow survey results are in, and thanks to these latest storms the statewide snowpack is now measuring near average, with above average totals in the northern Sierra and below average totals in the south. Why does the April 1st survey matter? It measures the snowpack when it is typically at its peak. While the snowpack has crept up to around average, that’s become atypical in this climate of extremes. In the last decade, we’ve seen swings from the historic winter of 2023 (237% of average) to the driest on record in 2015 (less than 10% of average). This cycle of weather whiplash creates the perfect storm for wildfires. On wet years, vegetation flourishes with new growth. The next drought year, all that new growth becomes fuel for the next fire. This year, we’re grateful for the relief of an average snowpack and all that it brings to these mountains and beyond. (fb)
