Eco Activists for Governance and Law Enforcement

Overview

Eco Activists for Governance and Law Enforcement, commonly referred to as EAGLE, is a non-profit organization established to combat wildlife crime and corruption related to environmental governance. Founded by activist Ofir Drori, the organization aims to promote civic activism and collaborate with governments and civil society to enforce national and international environmental legislation.

Mission and Objectives

The overarching objective of EAGLE is to develop civic activism and cooperate with national authorities to enhance law enforcement against wildlife trafficking, illegal logging, and associated criminal activities. EAGLE operates on a model that includes investigations, arrest operations, legal follow-ups, and public awareness campaigns. The organization has pioneered efforts to detect and combat corruption within environmental law enforcement, revealing corruption in approximately 85% of its arrest operations[1][2].

History and Development

EAGLE's foundational model originated in Cameroon in 2003 with the establishment of the first organization in the network, LAGA (Last Great Ape Organization). Over the years, this model has expanded to include eight national NGOs across sub-Saharan Africa, including:

  • Conservation Justice in Gabon (2017)
  • EAGLE Sénégal (2017)
  • PALF in Congo (2010)
  • EAGLE Togo (2013)
  • EAGLE Ivory Coast (2017)

This network has successfully shifted countries from having minimal wildlife prosecutions to achieving an average of one major trafficker arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned weekly[1][2].

Impact

Since its inception, EAGLE has significantly impacted the fight against wildlife crime, resulting in over 2,000 arrests of wildlife traffickers, averaging 100 arrests per year. In 2019 alone, the network apprehended 171 traffickers. EAGLE's work has led to notable cases, including major seizures of illegal wildlife products and arrests involving corruption in the wildlife trade, showcasing its effectiveness in addressing both crime and corruption[1][2].

Recognition

EAGLE's innovative approach in integrating anti-corruption measures into conservation efforts has garnered recognition, earning seven international awards to date. The organization's work has not only contributed to environmental conservation but has also influenced policy changes and enforcement effectiveness across the region[1].

Public Engagement and Media

EAGLE actively engages in public awareness campaigns to promote environmental law enforcement and wildlife conservation. It has been featured in documentaries that highlight its efforts and successes, including "The Ivory Game" and a more recent documentary on Conservation Justice[2].

Through its comprehensive model of operation, EAGLE continues to lead the fight against wildlife crime, fostering a collaborative environment between civic activists and governments to ensure the rule of law in the protection of wildlife and natural resources.
