Taylor Twellman Foundation
The Taylor Twellman Foundation, also known as ThinkTaylor, is a nonprofit organization founded by former U.S. national soccer player and Major League Soccer (MLS) star Taylor Twellman. Established in 2011 after his retirement from professional soccer due to complications from multiple concussions, the foundation focuses on education and awareness about concussions, particularly in youth sports[1][3].
Mission
The mission of ThinkTaylor is to ensure that children, parents, coaches, and others involved in youth sports are properly educated about concussions. This includes raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of concussions and promoting a supportive environment for those affected by them[1][3].
History
Taylor Twellman's career was cut short when he suffered from post-concussion syndrome, a condition that made him aware of the lack of understanding and proper care for traumatic brain injuries in sports. His experiences led him to channel his efforts into creating positive change by advocating for better concussion education and care for young athletes[1][3].
Activities and Impact
ThinkTaylor has been instrumental in launching Concussion Awareness Week, initially in Massachusetts, with significant growth from impacting 20,000 athletes to over 86,000 in just one year[1]. The foundation's #TTpledge initiative encourages individuals involved in youth sports to become educated about concussions and support affected athletes[3].
Taylor Twellman continues to be an advocate for concussion awareness and has become a prominent speaker at conferences, using his platform to push for better understanding and management of head injuries in sports[2][3].
