🌍 Did you know that the ocean holds around 80% of all biodiversity on Earth? Marine biodiversity hotspots are critical to the health of our planet, supporting everything from tiny corals to massive marine megafauna like whale sharks and sea turtles. Regions like the Mesoamerican Reef and the Caribbean are teeming with life, with each species playing a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. These hotspots are not only essential for wildlife but also for humans. Yet, these ecosystems face increasing threats: overfishing, habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. The loss of these hotspots means more than just the disappearance of species - it threatens the natural systems that sustain life on Earth. At MarAlliance, we are committed to protecting marine megafauna and the ecosystems they rely on across the Mesoamerican region. From conducting shark and ray surveys on remote reefs to implementing community-driven monitoring and education programs, we are advancing both science and conservation in partnership with local communities. Marine conservation is not just about protecting species, it’s about preserving the ecosystems that sustain the entire planet, for every living being on it, including humans. #BiodiversityDay #MarineConservation #OceanHealth #MarineBiodiversity #ProtectOurOceans #ConservationScience #CommunityDrivenConservation 📸Rachel Graham/Rick Miskiv/Steven Kishi/MarAlliance (fb)

In 50 years, what will our Ocean look like? The question is not theoretical - it's a pressing reality. Without urgent action, the ecosystems that sustain life on Earth will become increasingly unrecognizable, marked by the disappearance of key species. The scalloped hammerhead, Caribbean reef shark, Nassau grouper, and hawksbill turtle are just a few of the species we actively work to study, protect, and restore across the Mesoamerican region. Each of these species is classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List - an alarming indicator of the state of our oceans. These species are not just vital components of a region’s marine biodiversity; they are integral to maintaining the balance of ocean ecosystems. As apex predators, reef builders, and ecological regulators, their decline accelerates the destabilization of marine environments, which in turn impacts global food systems, coastal protection, and economic stability. The images you see fading before you are a reminder of the delicate fragility of our oceans, but we have the knowledge and tools to reverse the tide. The future of our oceans depends on the choices we make today. (fb)

We secure a future for marine wildlife. MarAlliance explores enables and inspires conservation action for threatened marine wildlife and their critical habitats working with dependent human communities. To do this we create new knowledge by monitoring the abundance and characteristics of species in key sites. We train local fishermen to help us at sea and engage our local communities to obtain information on sightings of important species.
