Description

Omaha Home for Boys

The Omaha Home for Boys (OHB) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing care and support to vulnerable youth and families. Founded in 1920, OHB has a rich history of serving its community, with its roots tracing back to a meeting by twelve men representing various Masonic organizations in Omaha. The organization was initially formed as the Nebraska Children’s Homefinding Association but later changed its name to Masonic Home for Children after realizing the need for a distinct identity.

History and Development

OHB began operations in March 1921, when it welcomed its first resident, 10-year-old James King, into a 14-room brick home purchased for $25,000. The location was chosen due to its proximity to downtown Omaha and surrounding schools. Over the years, OHB has evolved to provide a comprehensive continuum of care, focusing on the holistic development of its residents.

Mission and Programs

Today, OHB's mission is to transform lives and strengthen communities by providing services that inspire and equip youth, young adults, and families to lead independent, productive lives. The organization offers a range of programs addressing education, employment, housing, mental and behavioral health, life skills, transportation, and more. These initiatives are designed to help clients build the necessary skills to become productive members of their communities.

Services and Impact

As a nonsectarian 501(c)(3) organization, OHB provides care to over 1,100 individuals annually, regardless of their race, religion, or ability to pay. By offering a well-rounded and comprehensive approach, OHB works towards equipping its clients with the skills and confidence needed to succeed.

Governance

OHB is governed by a Board of Directors, led by a Chair, and supported by an Executive Committee. The organization is headed by a President and CEO, who oversees the strategic direction and operations.

Legacy and Impact

OHB's legacy extends beyond its immediate community, contributing to the broader landscape of youth care and family support. Its commitment to transforming lives and strengthening communities has been a benchmark for similar organizations across the U.S.
