The culture of any people group is directly impacted by their individual and corporate worldview. A worldview encompasses the answers to basic life questions – The Realms of Reality (ROR). This includes who we are as individuals, how we know what is true, who is in control -- from local authorities all the way to who or what runs the universe and so on. These questions are universal. However, the ways we as humans answer them are not. They provide each of us with a filter through which we see and interact with the world around us. Without a deep understanding of the worldview of the people, it's impossible to know how the gospel message will be interpreted through their unique filter. This is not to say that we change the gospel based on their preferences; rather, we present the gospel in a way that will take root in light of how they interpret the world. Without a proper understanding of their culture, worldview and filter, we run the risk of greatly miscommunicating the gospel, oftentimes leading to syncretism. (fb)
