#OTD 1781: General George Washington and French General Rochambeau met to plan the decisive Yorktown campaign, which would end the Revolutionary War just six months later. Hamilton didn’t attend. He’d already left Washington’s staff and was living with Eliza across the river in what’s now Beacon, NY. However, his moment came soon enough. During the nighttime assault on Redoubt 10, Hamilton led his troops with the cry “Rush on, boys!” The nearby French, attacking Redoubt 9, misheard it as “Rochambeau!” and were thrilled, thinking the Americans were cheering their general. A perfect case of battlefield encouragement... lost in translation. (fb)
