About the organization

- T99 -

Agriculture has played a critical role in America39s life and for AfricanAmericans an even more critical role. The small family farm structure dominated AfricanAmerican lifestyle from the early 160039s to the 196039s and was central in the concept of emancipation. Although AfricanAmerican farmers have made enormous contributions through agriculture to the economy both locally and nationally historians have largely ignored their role. As the only AfricanAmerican historical living farm museum in the United States Freewoods Farm is devoted to recognizing and perpetuating the contributions of AfricanAmerican farmers.
