Sharing from Avian Files Stages of Feather Destructive Behavior: Over-preening: Can cause feather damage or thinning of the feather as the parrot over preens the area of the body while preening. Scratching or Rubbing: this can happen when the parrot rubs feathers on its head and neck against the bars of the cage, perches or toys. Barbering: It is when the feathers are destroyed but not removed, A parrot may chew at the feathers or bite the off. Plucking: In this case the feathesareactually removed. Continues plucking foe over a period of time damages the follicles and new feathers donot grow back to replace plucked feathers. When a parrot intentionally pulls out a feather, due to the pain endorphins are released into the blood-stream giving a sense of calm. It is considered to be a possible reason for some parrots to pluck. Endorphins like drugs, are very addictive. So the ongoing cycle. Mutilation: Is when plucking escalates into self-mutilation, The parrot starts biting the skin once the feathers are removed. Exposing the parrot to infection and leading to major issue. (fb)
