Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing lifelong sanctuary and care for non-releasable wolves and wolfdogs. Located in Navasota, Texas, the sanctuary also focuses on educational outreach and conservation efforts.

History

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary was founded in 2002 by Jean LeFevre. The sanctuary's inception was sparked by the rescue of a wolf named Mystery, who had escaped from captivity and was later found injured in a leg trap. Jean LeFevre's determination to save Mystery led to the establishment of the sanctuary on October 4, 2002, coinciding with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, from whom the sanctuary derives its name.

Over the years, the sanctuary has expanded its operations. Initially located on a 3-acre property in Montgomery, Texas, it relocated to a larger 15-acre site in Navasota in 2020. This new facility allows for bigger enclosures and more space for educational activities.

Mission

The sanctuary's mission is to offer exceptional care to its residents while educating the public about the challenges and responsibilities associated with owning wolves and wolfdogs. It also aims to dispel myths surrounding these animals and promote conservation awareness.

Activities

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary engages in several key activities:

  • Rescue and Rehabilitation: The organization rescues wolves and wolfdogs from various sources, including shelters and private owners. Since these animals are habituated to humans and cannot be released into the wild, the sanctuary provides them with lifelong care.

  • Education and Conservation: Through guided tours, off-site presentations, and educational events, the sanctuary raises awareness about wolves and wolfdogs. It emphasizes the importance of responsible animal ownership and supports conservation efforts.

  • Care and Enrichment: The sanctuary provides its residents with high-quality food, veterinary care, and enrichment activities. Enclosures are designed to mimic natural habitats, offering amenities like houses, platforms, and natural dens.

Residents

The sanctuary is home to a diverse group of wolves and wolfdogs, including Alex, Beau, Calypso, Kaya, Koa, Lapua, McQuade, Meeko, Rajah, Raksha, and Ryu. Each resident has a unique story of rescue and recovery.

Support and Expansion

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary relies on donations and volunteer support to continue its mission. Future plans include completing a comprehensive wolf education and conservation center to enhance educational programs.

Jean LeFevre, the founder, passed away in 2020 but left a lasting legacy in the sanctuary's continued dedication to wolf and wolfdog welfare.
