DISTRIBUTING DIGNITYS MISSION IS TO DISTRIBUTE NEW BRAS, PADS AND TAMPONS, ENHANCING THE DIGNITY OF WOMEN IN NEED.

Distributing Dignity Inc.
Overview

Distributing Dignity Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the dignity of women in need. Its mission involves the distribution of new bras, pads, and tampons to women who face challenges in accessing these essential items.

History

Distributing Dignity was founded following an encounter at a homeless day center in Camden, NJ. During a clothing donation drive for job interviews, a woman expressed her need for a decent bra to wear under the donated clothes. This realization led to an exploration of other unmet needs, revealing a lack of access to basic menstrual products and undergarments.

In response, the organization's first event, a "Mardi Bra" party, was held in 2010. Guests were invited to bring new bras or packages of pads and tampons, resulting in the collection of 80 new bras and a substantial quantity of menstrual supplies. These items were distributed to women in need at the homeless day center.

Development

Over time, Distributing Dignity expanded its outreach beyond homeless women to include those aging out of foster care and families impacted by HIV/AIDS in South Jersey. Despite facing setbacks, such as the loss of a key figure in 2012, the organization continued to grow, inspired by the desire to lift the dignity of women struggling to obtain basic necessities.

Partnerships

Distributing Dignity partners with nonprofit organizations that serve women in various vulnerable populations. These partnerships are integral to identifying and addressing the needs of those they serve, ensuring that essential personal care items are accessible to those who need them most.

Evaluation

As of the latest reports, Distributing Dignity Inc. has been evaluated by Charity Navigator, earning a 2/4 Star rating. The organization's financials have shown fluctuations in revenue and expenses over the years, with efforts to maintain and grow its asset base.

Impact

The organization's work underscores the significance of dignity in personal care, particularly for women facing poverty or disadvantage. By focusing on providing new, rather than used, bras and essential menstrual products, Distributing Dignity aims to restore a sense of dignity and self-worth among the women they serve.
