Danville Light Opera Company Inc, now known as DLO Musical Theatre, is a nonprofit community theater organization in Danville, Illinois, founded in 1955. The company was officially incorporated on February 27, 1956, with the mission of producing live musical theater entertainment for the local community.
History
From its inception, DLO Musical Theatre aimed to provide opportunities for artistic expression and community engagement. The first production was The Merry Widow, staged at Schlarman High School on April 12, 1956. Early shows focused on operettas, transitioning later to popular Broadway musicals.
Over the years, the company adapted to financial challenges and changes in venue, shifting from Schlarman High School to Danville High School in 1960 and later to the Masonic Temple due to financial constraints. In the 1980s, DLO secured a space at 121 North Vermilion Street, establishing it as a hub for rehearsals and storage.
Recent Developments
In 2013, Danville Light Opera changed its name to DLO Musical Theatre to reflect its focus on Broadway-style musical theater. This period also introduced online ticket sales, enhancing accessibility for patrons. Collaborations with local entities, such as the Danville Area Community College, have been pivotal in staging large productions like Les Misérables.
DLO Musical Theatre continues to offer a variety of productions annually, including children’s and teen musicals, fostering community involvement and artistic growth.
