Hollis' donation-for-use policy has been in place for over 25 years. Peter Mayer wrote the song In Our Hands from the album Catching Rain. There is a line from that song that has always stood out to me: "give to tomorrow to all who live there." This is the sentiment we try to embody at Hollis. I often ask our guests to donate not for their stay but for the next person's, participating in a cycle that continues into the future. Stepping out from transactional exchanges and into relationships that depend on each other is a leap of faith. It is hard to be non-transactional in a world that is governed by power and money. Grace is the counter-cultural message that stands within all our transactions. If we "give to tomorrow to all who live there", we can imagine living more sustainably, caring for our neighbor, and giving space at Hollis for the next guest.
