Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System

The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System is an 18-member governing body responsible for overseeing the University of Wisconsin System. It includes 16 members appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin, subject to Senate confirmation, and two ex officio members: the state superintendent of public instruction and a representative of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board. Two of the appointed members are students, one of whom is a non-traditional student, each serving a two-year term.

Responsibilities

The Board of Regents is involved in various critical aspects of the University of Wisconsin System's governance, including:

  • Policy Establishment: The Board is responsible for establishing policies and rules governing the entire system.
  • Strategic Planning: It conducts planning to meet future state needs for collegiate education.
  • Admission Standards: The Board sets admission standards and policies across the system.
  • Budget Approval: It reviews and approves university budgets.
  • Operational Framework: The Board establishes a regulatory framework that allows individual units to operate with a significant degree of autonomy.

Leadership Appointments

The Board appoints key leadership positions within the system, including:

  • President of the University of Wisconsin System: The chief executive officer responsible for the overall management of the system.
  • Chancellors: The executive heads of each of the 13 universities.
  • Tenure Grants: The Board grants tenure appointments to qualified faculty members.

Meetings

The Board meets regularly eight times a year, with special meetings convened as needed. Its members serve without compensation. Key leadership roles within the Board, such as the President, Vice President, and a full-time Executive Director and Corporate Secretary, are elected annually during the Board’s meeting in June.

Legal Framework

The Board is established under Chapter 36 of the Wisconsin State Statutes, providing a legal basis for its role in governing the University of Wisconsin System.
