I never could have babies though I wanted them something fierce. I felt that instinctive need to nurture and have that deep unbreaking bond between mother and child. When our cow mommas started bellowing in the pasture after Tommy took their babies away in the red trailer, I lost it every single time. I felt that pain deep in my bones, felt the betrayal and the desperation to get those babies back. The mommas were helpless against us humans and our machinery, what could they do, having been placed in such an unnatural situation? In the wild, they would team up as a herd and drive predators away but here on the ranch, all they could do was cry for help and mourn. And they trusted us. I had been bottle feeding a calf named Rowdy Girl who had become like my baby so I was wide open to their grief. It was unbearable. I broke. This was not gonna happen on my watch anymore. I almost lost my husband over it. But after a fierce battle of wills and the miracle of the vegan community crowdfunding us out of cattle ranching, we became Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. If folks could make this simple shift in their thinking, everything would change.
