TO IMPROVE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CONTRACTORS, THE PRODUCTIVITY, COMPENSATION AND WORKING CONDITIONS OF CONSTRUCTION LABORERS.

Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA)

The Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), often referred to simply as the Laborers' Union, is a prominent labor union in the United States and Canada, established on April 13, 1903. It was initially formed as the International Hod Carriers and Building Laborers' Union, aimed at uniting local construction laborers to combat unfair labor practices. The founding convention, held in Washington D.C., was attended by delegates from 23 unions in 17 cities, marking the beginning of a significant movement for labor rights.

History
Early Years (1900–1920)

LIUNA’s roots can be traced back to the late 19th century, with local construction unions forming as immigrants, particularly from Europe, sought better working conditions. In 1903, under the leadership of Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), various local unions united to bolster their influence. The union's first president was Herman Lilien, who was elected at the inaugural convention.

The union underwent name changes in 1912, becoming the International Hod Carriers and Common Laborers of America, and later the International Hod Carriers' Building and Common Laborers of America. By 1920, membership had reached 96,000, and significant achievements included advocating for the rights of African American workers and organizing strikes for better wages in key cities like Pittsburgh and Chicago.

Mid to Late 20th Century (1920–2000)

LIUNA faced challenges during the Great Depression, leading to a dramatic drop in membership due to widespread unemployment. However, it rebounded during World War II, as the demand for construction surged, and membership grew to over 430,000 by the war's end.

In the 1960s, the union adopted its current name and became increasingly involved in civil rights issues, sending representatives to important events and advocating for equality within its ranks. The establishment of health, welfare, and pension plans enhanced members' quality of life, further solidifying the union's role in labor rights.

During the 21st century, LIUNA has continued to evolve, participating in significant national recovery efforts, such as the cleanup at Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks. The union also launched initiatives such as the first construction charter school in 2003.

Structure and Membership

LIUNA is organized into nine regions across North America, encompassing over 500 local unions. As of 2017, the union boasted approximately 500,000 members, with an estimated 80,000 in Canada. The union's leadership structure includes a General President, currently Brent Booker, who was elected in 2023.

Political Activities and Advocacy

LIUNA has a history of political engagement, demonstrated by its substantial contributions to political campaigns and proactive stances on labor legislation. The union has participated in numerous political actions, including a significant donation to a SuperPAC supporting the Democratic Party in the 2016 presidential election.

Conclusion

As a longstanding advocate for labor rights, the Laborers' International Union of North America has played a crucial role in shaping the construction industry and improving the lives of its members. With a commitment to addressing contemporary labor issues and enhancing worker rights, LIUNA continues to be a vital organization in the labor movement across North America.
