Southeastern Conference
Overview

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is a nonprofit organization based in the southeastern United States, primarily focused on promoting and administering intercollegiate athletic competition among its member institutions. It was established in December 1932 in Knoxville, Tennessee, by thirteen members of the Southern Conference. The SEC is registered as a 501(c)(3) entity, making donations to this organization tax deductible[1][2].

History

The SEC was formed when ten of the thirteen founding members of the Southern Conference broke away to create their own athletic conference. These founding members included the University of Alabama, Auburn University, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky, Louisiana State University, the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, the University of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt University. Over time, the conference has evolved with additions and departures, currently consisting of sixteen member institutions, adding the University of Arkansas, the University of Missouri, the University of South Carolina, and Texas A&M University[4].

Mission

The SEC's primary mission is to promote and administer intercollegiate athletic competitions that uphold the highest standards of education and competitive sports. It supports its member institutions in maintaining strong athletic programs, fostering healthy rivalries and providing a platform for student-athletes to excel[2][5].

Revenue Generation

The SEC generates revenue primarily from television rights, ticket sales, and other related sources for sports such as football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and gymnastics[2]. These funds are distributed among the member institutions to strengthen their athletic programs.

Financials

In recent years, the SEC has reported significant revenue from program services, which account for more than 95% of its total revenue. Contributions and investment income also contribute to its revenue, although at a much lower percentage[1]. The SEC has received a three-star rating from Charity Navigator, reflecting its strong accountability and financial management practices[2].

Leadership

Greg Sankey is the current Commissioner of the SEC, having taken over the position in 2015. The organization maintains a strong governance structure with a fully independent board, ensuring effective oversight of its operations[2][4].

Academic Initiatives

In addition to its athletic focus, the SEC is also involved in academic initiatives through the Southeastern Conference Universities (SECU). Established from the SEC Academic Consortium, SECU aims to promote research, scholarship, and academic achievement among its member institutions[4].
