This belief, based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s charge that "Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education," informs everything from daily classroom interactions between teachers and scholars, to administrative decisions about curriculum and programming.In 1997, Milwaukee College Prep opened as a rigorous K4-4th grade school in a city that sorely needed high performing schools. Today, responding to the continued urgent need for uncompromising schools, we have grown to a four-campus network with schools deliberately situated in Milwaukee's most under-served neighborhoods, educating nearly 2,000 children. While we have a few scholars who live outside Milwaukee, the vast majority represent virtually every zip code within the city of Milwaukee, pulling primarily from Milwaukee's poorest zip codes. 98% are African-American, and 83% are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch, a commonly used measure of economic hardship.
