Pennsylvania Lion Dance Association
The Pennsylvania Lion Dance Association, also known as Penn Lions, is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting and preserving the traditional art of Chinese lion dance. Founded in 2007 at the University of Pennsylvania, its mission is to learn, teach, and perform lion dance, celebrating Asian cultural heritage in the Greater Philadelphia area.
History
Prior to its establishment, there was no lion dance troupe around the University of Pennsylvania's campus. The idea for Penn Lions emerged during a Chinese Student Association Lunar New Year celebration, where founding members put together a makeshift lion dance performance. Following this, Henry Chow and other members researched lion dance troupes at other schools, leading to the creation of Penn Lions' mission statement. In the fall of 2007, Henry met Winston Ma, who became the troupe's first artistic director, bringing over a decade of experience with him. The initial group consisted of seven members who practiced extensively on campus. Penn Lions officially debuted in February 2008 during the Lunar New Year Celebration at Harnwell College House's Rooftop Lounge.
Style and Performances
Penn Lions specializes in the Southern Chinese Hok San style of lion dance, which emphasizes making the lion appear as lifelike as possible. This style is characterized by flashy tricks known as "stacks," where the performer in the tail lifts the performer in the head in various ways. Since its inception, Penn Lions has grown significantly, now including nearly 30 students. They perform year-round across the Mid-Atlantic region, including notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Georgetown University, Parx Casino, and numerous local weddings and celebrations.
Achievements
Penn Lions has achieved recognition by winning the East Coast Intercollegiate Lion Dance Competition in 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2023. They have also hosted this competition in 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2024. Throughout their existence, Penn Lions has delivered over 300 performances and workshops.
Impact
By promoting and performing lion dance, Penn Lions helps preserve Asian cultural traditions and strengthen community ties, reflecting the rich diversity of Philadelphia. Their performances not only entertain but also educate audiences about the historical and cultural significance of lion dance in Chinese culture.

Say hello to our newest lion, Taro! At the beginning of the semester, we welcomed Taro to Penn Lions through a traditional dotting ceremony — a ritual performed to awaken the lion and empower it to bring luck, prosperity, and wealth. Thank you to our alum, Pierre, and our current troupe members Julie, Ryan, Brianna, Emily, Miranda, Cheryl, and Alan for helping with the dotting ceremony! (fb)

Introducing our final newbie, Danny! Danny is a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas studying Nursing! Some of his hobbies include lifting, running, and eating. A fun fact about him is that he’s been lion dancing since he was 8! We’re glad to have you on troupe, Danny! 🦁 (fb)
