Gemini season has us thinking about art in duplicate. These ere ibeji (twin figures) — one female, one male — are on view in gallery L9. In Yoruba culture, twins are protected by Shango, the deity of thunder, and because of this connection, it is believed they can bring families good or ill fortune. If a twin passes away, parents commission a commemorative depiction of the child as an adult to be dressed and placed in a family shrine. In this way, the deceased twin continues to be cared for and honored by ritual feeding and applications of palm oil, camwood powder, and prestigious indigo.
