American Print Alliance

Follow Message Edit

The American Print Alliance seeks to increase prints' visibility and influence through education about and promotion of contemporary prints, papermaking and book arts. It publishes a journal, maintains a website with extensive resouces, and travels exhibitions to traditional venues (college and university galleries and small museums) and places that invite a much wider public (neighborhood centers, a shopping mall, magnet high school, book store and even a winery). The Alliance helps artists consider conceptual and theoretical issues to expand their creativity, including encouraging experimentation with traditional and new printmaking techniques, and helps present and explain their work to scholars and, more importantly, to the general public.

American Print Alliance

The American Print Alliance is a nonprofit organization recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity by the federal government. It operates as a consortium of printmakers' councils across the United States and Canada. The primary mission of the American Print Alliance is to promote and increase the visibility of print arts in the contemporary era.

Activities and Projects
  • Education and Promotion: The Alliance focuses on enhancing public awareness of prints through educational initiatives and the promotion of contemporary printing techniques. It accomplishes this by coordinating national and international projects, including traveling exhibitions and publishing efforts.

  • Traveling Exhibitions: One of the notable endeavors of the Alliance is organizing traveling exhibitions that highlight the role of prints in cultural and political discourse. For example, the "Soap Box Prints" series explores how prints express democratic values and encourage civic engagement.

  • Journal Publication: The Alliance publishes Contemporary Impressions, an internationally acclaimed journal that features critical articles, interviews, exhibition listings, and book reviews. This journal serves as a key resource for subscribers who have access to various print-related resources and events.

Partnerships and Funding
  • The organization's funding primarily comes from subscriptions to its journal. Additionally, the Alliance benefits from partnerships with suppliers and manufacturers in the print industry.

  • Benefits Affiliate: The Alliance has formed a partnership with the Freelancers Union, providing members with access to group-rate health insurance and other benefits, further supporting independent artists and printmakers.

Purpose and Impact

By promoting printmaking and its related arts, the American Print Alliance aims to inspire creativity and innovation in the field while fostering a broader appreciation for these art forms among the public. Its projects often highlight the significance of prints within cultural and political contexts, demonstrating their influence on societal discourse.
