Mission accomplished! Seed Savers Exchange staff recently packed seeds of 25 rare varieties for shipment to Svalbard, Norway, where they will be deposited at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The Norwegian government built the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in 2008 to store seeds from around the world as a safeguard against biodiversity loss. Svalbard is located just 800 miles from the North Pole, where the vault tunnels 500 feet into an icy mountain. Today, the vault houses over 1.2 million varieties of seeds, including over 4,000 varieties from SSE. Fun fact: SSE is the only genebank that has deposited seeds every year since the seed vault opened.
