History
Heartland United Way's origins date back to 1947 when it was founded in Grand Island as part of a combined community campaign. Initially, it supported four partner agencies, including the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, YMCA, and Salvation Army. Over the years, the organization grew, and in 1956, it established its first permanent office. By 1975, it became affiliated with the national United Way organization under the name Grand Island United Way, Inc. The organization underwent a significant transformation in 1993, when it expanded its service area to the current four-county region and changed its name to Heartland United Way.

The organization partners with local community agencies to distribute funds raised from its annual campaigns, which often include workplace fundraising efforts.
